Help Us Welcome Home Teresa Scanlan, Miss America!

Wow, have I've got some exciting news to share.

I have had this in the works now for a couple of weeks and have finally got all the details taken care of and can finally share this newsflash!

For those of you who don't know, the newly crowned Miss America, Teresa Scanlan, is from my home state of Nebraska. But not only is she from my beloved Cornhusker state, she is from the same county, Scotts Bluff County. Actually her hometown of Gering, Nebraska is about 20 miles from where we live. Do I actually know her? No... but let me tell you that Teresa winning the title of MISS AMERICA has caused quite the excitement here in our little corner of the state known as the Panhandle.

Teresa Scanlan, Miss America 2011

As most of you know, I have organized the Scottsbluff Winter Farmers Market this past year. At each of the winter markets, we try to feature a non-profit organization that market-goers can donate to while they are shopping at the market. I have posted about several of them in the past.

Oh and by the way, you might like to know that our last organization, SKIPPER'S CUPBOARD, collected tons (not literally) of dog & cat food along with a total of $355.69 in cash donations. I will post about that very soon and share some pictures of Snickers and the market with you.

Anyway... back to what this post is suppose to be about.

I had heard on the radio a while back that the Miss Nebraska Organization would be responsible for the cost of Teresa's homecoming celebration. I immediately thought that the Miss Nebraska Organization would be perfect for an upcoming non-profit organization at the winter farmers market! What a perfect cause for the Panhandle residents to support.

At each of the markets where we feature a non-profit we usually collect donations from the vendors and compile a basket full of goodies to be given away to some lucky person who donates to the cause. In other words, if you donate to the cause, you get to enter your name into a drawing for a gift basket compiled of goodies from the market vendors. The more I thought about it, the more I wanted to do something other than a gift basket as a give away... I wanted something "special" for this cause.

Then the idea came to me, that we should have a BIG card, a congratulations card, for people to sign for Teresa. But, with the winter market not having a large amount of funds available for such things... I thought that it would be a great idea to have a local business donate the card. I called Spencer McMurtry who owns and operates Infinite Graphics in Scottsbluff and mentioned the idea to him. Spencer was very gracious and said he would be more than happy to donate the card! Thanks again Spencer!

This card is going to be BIG folks. We are not talking a "large" card, we are talking a 4ft by 4ft Congratulations Card. Not a poster, a real card, you know with a fold that opens up! My idea is to have the main artwork of the card be the signatures and congratulatory wishes from the residents of the Panhandle. We will have a rainbow of permanent markets available to sign the card and a lot of space for signatures.

We will present the card to Teresa at the press conference on Wednesday, February 23rd, time to be announced.

So, here are the particulars. The card will be available to sign at the Scottsbluff Winter Farmers Market on February 19th from 1-4pm at the Scottsbluff Hampton Inn Conference Center. Cash donations will also be accepted for the Miss Nebraska Organization to help pay for Teresa's homecoming celebration on February 23rd.

Please help us spread the word so that we have TONS of signatures on the card! I am sure that there are SEVERAL people who would like to personally congratulate Teresa for her accomplishment. What a perfect way to do so! Let us also donate to Teresa's homecoming! If you would like to donate to Teresa's homecoming, but will not be able to bring your donation to the Winter Farmers Market on February 19th, you can donate directly to the Miss Nebraska Organization (you can click on the link.)

Goat Cheese Girl and Country Chicken Girl Get Mooned!

Me, Sarah Pinet and Kevin Mooney

On Friday morning, November 5th, Sarah Pinet, the goat cheese girl and my self did a live interview with Kevin Mooney on KNEB Radio to promote the Scottsbluff Winter Farmers Market. A BIG thank you goes out to "Mr. Hot Stuff" aka Bob Sharp, one of the vendors who made the connection for us!

Sarah is a bit of a goof like me and I told her that if she wore her Shrek ears I would wear my Groucho Marx glasses. So we show up at the radio station at 7:30 am sporting our most becoming look! Before the interview we chatted a little with Kevin and waited for our turn to go on the air. As the time got closer, I got a little more nervous. I really didn't want to sound like a goof, even though I looked like one.

Just a couple of goofs who know how to have fun!

I could feel a huge lump forming in the back of my throat as we entered the sound booth. Egads, what was I doing? I made sure to come prepared and brought notes so I wouldn't just sit there and say uhh, uhhh, uhhh. We took our seats and the next thing I knew Kevin was introducing us LIVE, ON THE AIR!

Wait, wait, wait... I wasn't ready....

Kevin said something like this...

Kevin: This morning we are going to talk about the Scottsbluff Winter Farmers Market and with me this morning I have Kathi Manville of the Hampton Inn and Sarah Pinet who is one of the vendors. So Kathi, could you tell us how this all came about?

Meanwhile, Sarah is shaking her head thinking... "oh no, Kevin just made a big boo-boo!"

I am frantically trying to decide how I am going to correct this little mistake without sounding like a doof! "Kathi Manville of the Hampton Inn..." egads, how did that come about?

All the sudden the heat is on me and my heart and head are racing a thousand beats per minutes. Sarah looks at me and gives me a "good luck chuck" look with her Shrek ears on.

Kathi: Well Kevin, I have to correct you by stating that I am not with the Hampton Inn, but instead I am with the Open A Bar 2 Ranch, another vendor who will be participating in the winter market. (BIG GULP! Air, I need AIR! Help I can't breathe!)

Kevin: My apologizes to you, so tell us how this all came about?

Whew, nice recovery Kevin, now we could move on and move on we did.

Uhhh.... One problem... I hadn't rehearsed that question in my head. Good thing that I had already been presented with that question by Katie Bradshaw when she interviewed me for the Scottsbluff Star-Herald. Oh, you didn't see that? Well, here is the link:

Farmer’s market heads indoors for winter

So on goes the interview... I felt like I had a mouth full of bubblegum the size of Texas and also like I had an elephant sitting in my lap. When the first break came and we went to a commercial, I panted like a fish out of water gasping for air! Geez, this was crazy. What did I even say? I prayed to God and asked Him to help me though the next set of questions. Sarah sat there as calm as a june-bug with her little Shrek ears on. I had to take off my Groucho Marx glasses because they kept falling off and the mustache was tickling my upper lip.

The commercial break was over in the blink of an eye, I think it was for a mortuary and I was thinking that I could very well be their next customer if I didn't get my heart under control. I was thinking of the headline... Country Chicken Girl has a heart attack doing morning radio interview.

I'm not sure what all we talked about, but I know I was talking about all the vendors who were going to be there. I felt like I had been talking for an hour and wasn't sure if I should wrap it up or what? So I started to wrap things up before I had a chance to talk about all the vendors. Then I felt bad because I didn't mention every one. I guess we had a little more time because Kevin said something like, "I see you have a few more vendors coming..." which allowed me to talk about a few more.

As I was talking about the vendors I was reading from a list I had written. All of the sudden I was faced with a gosh darn word I can never pronounce... APOTHECARY. Dang, I knew I couldn't say it and I was kicking myself for not practicing it before I left the house and all the way to the radio station in the car. Now I was going to sound like a doof for sure. But never fear... for Sarah was there... and she calmly spouted forth the word for me. APOTHECARY eloquently rolled off her tongue like a beautiful rose in full bloom. Thank you Sarah!

After the interview Kevin presented us with cool coffee mugs that say "Have you been Mooned on KNEB?" Why yes, we have!!

I must include the Green Valley Homesteaders as well even though they aren't really a vendor, but in a way you could say they are. Wynne Buehler, Bill Snocker and John Jessup filled the market with toe tappin', hand slappin' music at the first market on November 6th.

Bill Snocker, Wynne Buehler and John Jessup

I contacted Wynne about playing at a few of the markets and told him about my dismal entertainment budget ($0) and he said they'd be happy to play at the Market at no cost to us, but would play solely for tips. How cool is that? So if you really like having them there at the market, please, please, please let them know and support them with your generous tips! All tips generously given are graciously received!

Well, that's all I have time for now. I have to make two cakes for the computer club for Skyler. He always volunteers me to make the desserts, at least he has faith in me in that department, other wise, according to his thinking, I am so misinformed on the ways of the world! hee, hee. Typical teenage boy...

Oh Skyler also said that "the only thing the computer club does is meet in the computer room and that is why they are the computer club." The club has nothing to do with computers? I wonder what exactly it is that they do then? Do they just meet every once in a while so they can have an excuse for me to make dessert for them??? Hmmm...

Flower Field Farm

Meet the crew at the Flower Field Farm. What a great addition they have been to the Farmers' Market this year. Nathaniel and Rylee live on an organic wheat farm/cattle ranch in Banner County. The land is owned by Nathaniel's parents, Roger Lee Jr. and LaDona McGowan. Nathaniels's great-grandfather homesteaded the land over 100 years ago.

Nathaniel and Rylee wanted to spend more "working" hours at home and raising their family, Delaney 4, Eddie 3, Teagan 18 mos. and Rayfe 4 mos. Joy moved to Banner County in 2006 to be closer to family and quality schools for her children, Noah 15 and Kadan 13.

Together they offer a variety of products at the Farmers' Market including heirloom vegetables, freshly baked breads and pies, farm fresh eggs, cookies, and cinnamon rolls.

This is a hard working group of people dedicated to the land on which they live and their community. Nathaniel's mother, LaDona, will be growing produce for the Flower Filed Farm next year as will his twin brothers and their wives, Roger & Mandy and Ben & Tory. They plan to expand their offering and will be attending more markets next season. They also are adding 100 new hens this coming spring along with offering all natural pork.

You can read more about the Flower Field Farm on PrairieBloom.com.

Country Chicken Girl once again reporting from the 2010 Scottsbluff Farmers' Market located in downtown Scottsbluff at 18th & Broadway every Saturday (until the first frost) from 7-11am. I have been doing short little stories on the individual vendors at the market. If you've missed the previous posts, here they are:

Meet Bob Sharp from Gering. Bob has masterfully concocted a hot dry rub that is perfect for steaks, pork, ribs, chicken wings, chili, salsa, tacos, etc. The rub is called S.O.S. which stands for Surface Of the Sun. Each bottle is blended and packaged one at a time to insure uniformity.

Bob Sharp, the Pepper Man

Hot peppers have always been a passion for Bob. As Bob says, he is always on the "lookout for the next hotter one!" Bob's parents were in the restaurant business for about 30 years, starting in Southern Oklahoma and ending up in Kimball, Nebraska. Bob said growing up they had southern style foods and his mother always had a bottle of peppers on the dinner table. I think Bob's mom fed him hot peppers even as a baby! I have seen him eat a jalapeno pepper fresh from the garden like it is a sweet juicy apple!! I couldn't do that. I watched him eat the whole pepper with eyes as wide saucers. That is MY eyes were as wide as saucers, not Bob's. He didn't even break a sweat.

The basic rub that Bob uses comes from Texas and won 2nd place in the Dry Rub BBQ Cook-Off which is held in Texas each year. Bob then adds Habanero, Red Savina and Naga Bhut Jolokia, which is also called the "ghost chili." Ghost chili is 200-300 times hotter than the Jalapeno pepper.

I have tried Bob's dry rub on a scrambled egg dish I made which had ham, tomatoes, zucchini and cheese in and it was delicious! Then last night we had fried potatoes with the rub on them. They were fantastic. Move over potato ole's, a new kid is in town!!

Bob says, "If you want to spice up your favorite dish, S.O.S. is just what you need." You can reach Bob at 308-436-2349 home, 308-641-0817 cell or by email JadeFinder@hotmail.com. He is also selling his rub at the Farmers' Market in Morrill which is every Tuesday from 3-6:30 pm.

Judy Meter and Heidi Robertus

Meet Judy and Heidi, the fresh-baked-lovin'-from-the-oven ladies! Boy, do these two know how to handle your sweet cravings! They bake everything from caramel pecan rolls, pumpkin cake rolls, double chocolate banana cake, chocolate zucchini cake, carrot muffins with cream cheese frosting, sweet orange bow knots, biscotti, caramel covered marshmallow pops, etc.

Biscotti and Caramel Marshmallow Pops!

Assorted Sweet Breads

Oh, did I mention the cheddar & bacon scones?? Delicious!

This guy couldn't resist some of the caramel pecan rolls,
which along with the sweet bow knots, that are baked the morning of the market!

Judy and Heid use only the finest ingredients for their baked goods, fresh cream, butter, Ghiradelli chocolate, etc. Don't bother stopping by their booth unless you want to treat your sweetie or yourself to something scrumptious. I bought carrot cupcakes with cream cheese frosting last week. They were scrumptious!! The girls also bake with products purchased directly from the farmers market such as fresh peaches, pure local honey and peanut butter. Way to go girls! BUY LOCAL, BUY LOCAL, BUY LOCAL!!

If you'd like to order something, give Judy a call at 436-4031.

Well, that's it for this post. If you haven't made time to come to the market, you'd better get your pony saddled up and giddy-up and git yourself over there!

RECIPE: Glazed Peach Habenero Grilled Pork Chops

Last night for dinner we had a meal totally comprised of local food purchased at the Farmers' Market. Wow, that makes me feel so good. Not a single ingredient was purchased at Wal-mart or any other store for that fact except for vinegar, sour cream, butter, salt and pepper.

The menu consisted of Glazed Peach Habenero Grilled Pork Chops, Sour Cream Cucumber Salad, Roadside Melon, Corn on the Cob and French Bread (warmed on the grill). I should have taken a picture of the whole meal, but it was late and I was tired.

Here is a list of the Cast of Characters and their producers:

Pork Chops (milk-fed pork) from Victory Hill Farm
Peach Habenero Jam homemade by Nancy Butcher
Fresh Garden Cucumbers from Mitchell Valley Farm
Sweet & Juicy Roadside Melon from Gary's Garden
Tri-colored Sweet Corn from Mitchell Valley Farm
Homemade French Bread from FlowerField Farms

And the recipe for the pork chops:

Glazed Peach Habenero Grilled Pork Chops

Ingredients

4 Pork Chops from Victory Hill Farm
1 jar Peach Habenero Jam from Nancy Butcher

Directions

  1. Preheat Grill to 350 degrees.
  2. Rub grill grate with oil. Use your tongs and dip a wadded-up paper towel in oil. Easy!
  3. Grill chops for around 5 minutes per side. Brush a generous amount of jam on both sides of the chops while you are grilling.
  4. Heat extra jam in a small sauce pan and serve with the chops for extra sauce!!

Try it! You'll like it!!

Bill & Arlene Grassmick, Wildcat Produce and Nita's Catering & Event Planning

Country Chicken Girl here continuing my little ditties about the vendors at the 2010 Scottsbluff Farmers' Market which is held every Saturday from 7-11am downtown at 18th & Broadway.

Meet Bill & Arlene Grassmick of Gering, Nebraska. This is one of the most lovely couples I have ever met. They have been coming to the Farmers' Market ever since it first started.

Bill & Arlene Grassmick

Bill has been building beautiful handcrafted willow furniture for about 20 years. These pieces of art are truly unique and beautiful. Bill creates each piece from green willow branches that have a short working time, since once they become too dry, the branches will split and break. He also uses weeping birch, pine and black walnut. All the woods he uses are found locally.

Arlene will tell you that she has a home filled with Bill's furniture. She'll tell you about each piece they have in their house and where it is situated. I would love a tour sometime so that I can see all the lovely pieces. I can tell you that not only do they have a home filled of Bill's beautiful handiwork, but I believe that they have a home filled with love for each other and the family that they have raised together.

I don't know what time Bill & Arlene show up at the Farmers' Market to set up because Arlene is always set up and ready to go before I arrive at 6:30 am. Last year Arlene told me that they come early, set up and then Bill goes off to the hospital for his dialysis. Bill then returns to the market when he is done at the hospital. This has been their Saturday morning routine for the last 5 years.

Bill & Arlene rest their feet on a foot stool.

You won't believe how sturdy and comfortable these chairs are.
Arlene will be sure to tell you that they are made to sit in!

I bought a chair like this last year,
only mine is made of birch, looks like the foot stool above.

Bill also makes smaller decorative pieces.

Bill and Arlene live in Gering. If you would like more information on Bill's furniture you can call Bill or Arlene at 436-5469.

Tracy & Tegan Rahmig
Wildcat Produce

Meet Tracy & Tegan Rahmig of Wildcat Produce. Tracy has been doing farmers' markets since she was a kid. Her daughter, Tegan who is 10 years old, has been helping Tracy for the past three years now. Tracy says it's their way of spending time together. It's hard to believe how much Tegan grows each year. I have seen her grow and mature each summer and it is amazing how much taller she is each year! Tegan is a great sales person and is just as much as a business woman as Tracy is.

Baby Red Potatoes

Their produce is grown between Melbeta and McGrew. Tracy's dad, Mike Chrisman is the master gardener of their operation. They offer baby red potatoes, yellow & green zucchini, onions, cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, cabbage, hot peppers and gourds. Tracy and Tegan live south of Gering while Tracy's parents are from McGrew.

Cabbage for those Cabbage Burgers!

Beautiful Ripe Tomatoes

Juanita Rodriguez

Meet Juanita Rodriguez of Nita's Catering & Event Planning. Nita offers home style cooking featuring Mexican/American Food. Her specialties are enchiladas and salsa. Nita takes special request weekly. I tried some of Nita's enchiladas last year and I must say they were delicious! She also makes stellar enchilada sauce.

Nita's enchiladas and burritos

Be sure to come visit with these local producers and more at the Scottsbluff Farmers' Market held every Saturday morning from 7-11am on 18th and Broadway. Support your community, BUY LOCAL!!

Thank you and goodbye for now...
